Al, you have inspired me to make my first spoon. Me and Jacob started on it last Sunday. I used red oak. I let him rough turn it. It was the first time he has ever done any lathe work. We had a good time with the project. I used a forstner bit to drill out the spoon part. Now I need to get to sanding to smooth it out. I hate sanding. Probably why I haven't finished it yet.
What finish do you use? I was thinking mineral oil and bees wax.

I figured we had a couple oak spoons the wife bought from the store so it was a safe wood to use. In fact the spoons we have don't even have a finish on them. I don't see myself making many spoons but it was nice to make something different.
I gonna have to get me some of those burr bits. Got one of those foredom carvers but no bits for it yet.
What is the scraper made from?

We used to use steel banding at work... and when the spool ran out?...... there was a metal hoop in the center about 3 " wide and 1/16" thick....I cut it in short blanks and made scrapers from them... I also heat treated them....quenching in transmission fluid so it holds a burr longer.
