.I prefer a mandrel though that will let ya turn a piece around 4 1/4" in length though. The plastic reeds work great and I fir them into a 1/2" bore and use a 3/4" bore for the other section of the 2 piece call.Hope this post helps some.

Deer grunts are the basic foundation fo calls. By hat I mean, that to make one, you need to do most evrything you would do for most every other call. OK, first off, size matters, at least in deer grunts. MOST barrels are 4 inches long (give or take). The bore through the barrel is usually 3/4 inch in diameter. It can be bigger. Smaller is tough because most reed kits are designed for a 3/4 hole. Once you have your barrel bored, put it on a mandrel. Get a 3/4 mandrel from Chad. They work great and hold up great. Put it on the mandrel and create your shape. The reed holder/stopper is anywhere from 2 inches long to 3 inches with a 1/2 inch bore. Your choice. The only thing to remember is the tennon must fit into the barrel nicely and with o-rings be air tight, but not too tight so you crack the barrel. From there, get creative. I'll see what i cn do about a tutorial when I get more deer grunts going.
